We had the pleasure of designing the cultural lounge area for the Lowitja International Indigenous Health Conference 2016. Our brief was to create a space where delegates could relax, engage with each other and to soften the hard lines and cold colours of the Melbourne Convention Centre. We created a semi-enclosed space with furniture in the colours of the conference logo, a weaving area with grass floor mats, ginormous pillar wraps with kangaroo paw and lamandra grass artworks, living sculptural pieces with live kangaroo paws and sand artworks and our favourite addition, a bookshelf of Elder’s gifts. These handmade offerings included emu feather necklaces, earrings and pins. Elders were welcome to select and take home these gifts of appreciation in recognition of all their hard work in paving our way.
